WMC Map Error connecting to the database

When I try to save my map it gives me an error: "Error connecting to the database: Unable to open the database file"
Error connecting to the database: Unable to open the database file

Solution: This error occurs when something has caused your file to be opened by more than one process, making the current version of WMC Map unable to save your changes back to the file. It is important to note that if you get this error and don't take any action as described below, even though you have clicked on save, your changes will not have saved.

There are two ways to attempt to recover from this error:

  1. Try using "Save As" and saving your file with a different file name. If the error does not come up, your new file will have your changes saved in it. You can then delete the old file and simply carry on using the file with your new filename.
  2. If Save As did not work and you are using WMC Map Design, you can export each layer as a shape file, then create a new file and import all of your shapefiles into that new file. Instructions for exporting shape files can be found here.

This is not a very common error, but if you get it, it means your file has been corrupted and the best way to avoid it again is to create a new file by using the Save As or shapefile method as outlined above.
